In this fine a cappella setting, new light shines onto one of the most beloved of all Christmas texts, Silent Night. A graceful soprano melody is set against the backdrop of rich lower voice sonorities, with an interwoven texture and seamless phrases which gradually yield to a declamation on the words “’round yon Virgin.” In the final verse the treble voices soar above a pedal tone in the lower vocal parts, ending with a brief section of repose which paints a serene mood.

Silent Night (All is Calm)

Silent night, holy night,
all is calm, all is bright
round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
sleep in heavenly peace,
sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
shepherds quake at the sight;
glories stream from heaven afar,
heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love’s pure light;
radiant beams from thy holy face
with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Silent night, holy night,
wondrous star, lend thy light;
with the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!
